Singing in the Prison
This week’s anchor:
No circumstance can separate us from the presence and power of Jesus Christ.
Unsettling Times, Unshakable Hope
We live in unsettling times.
The news is dark. Social media is darker. Anxiety seems to be everywhere.
But Christians have lived through far worse—and one of the most powerful examples of unshakeable faith comes from a prison cell in Philippi.
Midnight Praise in Philippi
Paul and Silas had been beaten and thrown into prison. Their backs were torn open from lashes. Their feet were fastened in stocks.
If anyone had reason to despair, it was them.
But at midnight, instead of crying out in bitterness or begging for release, they did something astonishing.
Were they begging to be released?
Not even close.
Instead, they did something many of us might struggle to do.
They sang hymns to God and prayed.1
They praised God even after being beaten.
Joy in the midst of unimaginable suffering.
How is it possible?
They understood one very simple thing.
That no matter what anyone did to them, no matter what was taken from them, and no matter how bad it became, Jesus Christ would never leave them.
And I could almost weep just writing this.
It’s so amazing when you see it.
You could lose literally everything and get beaten within inches of death or have to endure any number of hardships.
Jesus Christ will never leave you—and He has given you His power to overcome.
Paul and Silas sat in a dirty jail cell and sang to their Lord with what may have been the last ounces of strength they had.
Because despite everything they endured, they still possessed everything that is found in Jesus Christ.
Their internal spiritual reality outweighed their external physical suffering.
While their bodies remained bound, their hearts and spirits remained free in Christ.
As Jesus declared, “if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed.”2
They were anchored in the knowledge of God’s love and presence, which no prison or shackle could separate them from.
They rejoiced in their suffering.
Sisters and brothers, that is incredibly good news.
You won’t get better news these days.
Don’t believe me?
Go turn on a TV or hit social media.
It’s bad. Real bad. Darker by the day.
But the joke’s on them.
Our Anchor This Week
The world can threaten, take, accuse, imprison, and even kill—but it cannot take Christ from His people.
Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38–39
And if Christ is yours, you still possess everything that truly matters.
He’s a lily in the valley of death.
That’s joy amidst suffering, knowing that you’re never truly alone and that His grace is always sufficient.
This is why Paul also boasted in his weakness.
Because Christ’s power is perfected in our weakness.
When we are weak, He is strong.
So do not despair saints.
Our Lord has already claimed the victory.
And He dwells in us.
Nothing that awaits you this week can change that.

Acts 16
Jesus said this in John 8:36

Amen! Praising God in whatever circumstances we are in, is the best way to overcome fear and freeing us from worrying our present situation. Great sharing!
Thank you!
